Registration and Licensing of Pets

If you live in the city limits of Hiawatha, you must license your cat or dog with the city every year!

PET TAGS ARE NOW AVAILABLE AT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT FROM 8-11:30 AM  AND 1:00-4:30 PM.

The cost is $10.00 for all licensed pets.  Proof of rabies vaccine for your pet is required at the time you purchase the tag. If tags are purchased after March 1, there will be a $5.00 penalty assessed unless you are a new resident after that date or get a new pet after that date.

IT’S THE LAW!

You are allowed to have no more than three (3) dogs or (2) cats at your residence and no more than a total of four (4) pets including cats and dogs per City Code of Hiawatha Section 2-123. **Rottweilers or Pitbulls, or mixtures thereof, are NOT allowed inside the city limits.

DON’T LET THEM RUN LOOSE!

All pets must be on a leash, in a pen, or in your home at all times.

Animals picked up by the City of Hiawatha will now be taken to the Brown County Humane Society where they will be held.. The owner may pick them up after paying a fine of $50 and the impound fee. If the animal has not been licensed in the City of Hiawatha (unless the owner lives outside the city limits), the owner will also have to purchase a city tag and show proof of current rabies vaccine before the animal is released to them. Tags and fines may be paid for at the Brown County Humane Society.
