Welcome Message from the Chief of Police

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Hiawatha Police Department. The Police Department is located at 413 Oregon in the Law Enforcement Center. Our Department is staffed by: Police Chief John Defore, Captain Dennis Entrikin, Investigator Mickey Gruber, Officer Janet Jeffery, Officer Brandon Lowe, Officer Justin Keller, Officer Dustin Winters, Officer Trevor Fee, Officer Dugan Shoemaker and Part time Officers: Duke Koerperich and Cory Lay. Supervising Records Clerk/Municipal Court Clerk Barbara Mauslein, Assistant Records Clerk Jeanette Ward.  

Hiawatha is a wonderful place to raise a family.  We offer down-to-earth values with a strong since of community pride.   Hiawatha is a progressive, “forwarding thinking “community located in Northeast Kansas.  Hiawatha has excellent shopping, swimming, outdoor recreation, and wonderful schools, all wrapped up in an inviting small town.  

At the Hiawatha Police Department our mission is to improve the quality of life while maintain order.   We strive to reduce crime through education, awareness and prevention. To us, providing police services is a lot more than just responding to a call and taking a report; it means working with the community to prevent crime and solve community problems. The cooperative working relationship between police officers and the people we serve is improving every day, and citizen confidence in the Police Department is the highest it has ever been.

The Police Department conducts Motor Vehicle Examinations (MVE’s) every Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday from 8-12; 1-4:30.
