The Public Works Department is located at 914 Miami Street. The Department consists of three branches of Public Services in Water & Lights, Streets & Sewer services. The Waste Water Plant is located at 2276 Linden Road and the Water Treatment Plant is at 2639 US Hwy 73.
Under the supervision of Department Leaders, the Public Works Crew is responsible for providing the community with quality, professional and timely services. The Department strives to maintain the City’s infrastructure in a safe and functional condition, to meet all federal and state requirements and to ensure that all public improvements are designed and constructed in accordance with good engineering standards.
The Public Works Department is made up of 9 cross-trained employees. They are responsible for maintaining City streets, including pothole repairs, paving, crack sealing, snow and ice removal. They are also responsible for plant operations as well as pump and lift stations throughout the City. There is over 100 miles of sanitary sewer in Hiawatha which processes an average of 300,000 gallons of wastewater on a dry day!
