The Hiawatha Parks and Recreation Department is located within the Fisher Community Center at 201 E. Iowa Street, right next to the Aquatic Park. HP&R is made up of four full time employees and over 40 seasonal employees. In addition, HP&R supervises numerous volunteers and community service workers throughout the year.
HP&R has many responsibilities throughout the City of Hiawatha, including Recreation Programs, Events, the maintenance of Parks and City Facilities and operating the community center.
The Parks and Recreation Department hosts over 50 events and programs annually, including sports leagues and camps, family and senior events, fitness classes and races, holiday events, educational classes, aquatic programs and more. The mission of HP&R is to enrich the quality of life for our community through safe, well-maintained parks and facilities that promote diverse recreation activities, health, wellness, learning and fun.
HP&R is home to numerous parks within Hiawatha including the Aquatic Park (203 E Iowa Street,) Skate Park (203 E Iowa Street,) Crestview Park (402 Cheyenne Avenue,) Kiddie Korral (802 S Morrill Avenue,) Starr Park (900 Pottawatomie Street,) Noble Park (805 S Morrill Avenue,) Bruning Park (2100 Apache Street,) the City Lake (2199 US-73 Highway) and also oversees the walking trail (starting near Noble Park and winding through Hiawatha Middle and High School lots.)
The Fisher Community Center provides a desirable setting for many events in northeast Kansas, including weddings and receptions, conferences, meetings, parties, reunions and more. The Center offers 3 room options, a newly remodeled kitchen, upgraded bathrooms and a fun outdoor patio area. The Fisher Center also offers many amenities including a portable sound system, electric projector screen and projector, a full commercial kitchen with many appliances, ice machine, carts, free Wi-Fi and more. The service is unmatched with set-up, tear-down, and excellent customer service and communication.
