Welcome Message from the Chief of Police

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Hiawatha Police Department. The Police Department is located at 413 Oregon in the Law Enforcement Center.  John Defore is the Chief of Police, and Barb Mauslein is the Supervising Records Clerk/Municipal Court Clerk.  In addition to the Chief, Dennis Entrikin serves as Police Captain, and we employee our full-time officers;  Janet Jeffery, Michael Gruber, Brandon Lowe, and Dustin Winters.  Along with our part-time officers, Cory Lay and Michael "Duke" Koerperich.  Jeanette Ward serves as the Assistant Records Clerk and Beau Hasenohr also serves as Detective and Code Enforcement Officer.

Hiawatha is a wonderful place to raise a family.  We offer down-to-earth values with a strong since of community pride.   Hiawatha is a progressive, “forwarding thinking “community located in Northeast Kansas.  Hiawatha has excellent shopping, swimming, outdoor recreation, and wonderful schools, all wrapped up in an inviting small town.

At the Hiawatha Police Department our mission is to improve the quality of life while maintain order.   We strive to reduce crime through education, awareness and prevention. To us, providing police services is a lot more than just responding to a call and taking a report; it means working with the community to prevent crime and solve community problems. The cooperative working relationship between police officers and the people we serve is improving every day, and citizen confidence in the Police Department is the highest it has ever been.

Respectfully,

John A. Defore
